I just adore orchard baskets especially offered in the smaller sized version because of their versatility to be decorated in so many different ways… whether it be for the holidays or in the "Buttery" filled with root vegetables. In this case I decided to arrange this basket using a Christmas theme and even added wee lights that will bring magical enchantment to any room it is placed in.
Excelsior was placed inside to gain height. Next greens, berries and pine cones were used to decorate the top opening. Of course my instincts told me to incorporate a handmade, primitive snowman that has been gently aged and looks right at home set among st the greens! He is just having a great old time! His black hat and red scarf will keep him warm as some of the snow tipped branches are an indication that yet another storm is fast approaching. Lastly, I weaved a tiny stand of lights in and out of the greens to add even more Christmas cheer! This strand will plug in conveniently to any electric receptacle.
The basket is in good overall condition and has a neat lapped over band secured by old nails with appropriate "nail bleed" in the wood as shown in image 4. The bottom of these baskets were usually fashioned from wood, not splint as the weight of the produce may compromise the bottoms integrity over time. In this case a hole was drilled though the wood to allow air circulation that would aid in keeping the produce fresh as referenced in image 6.
There are no visible breaks and this basket is in good condition. The dark surface in the wood is most desirable and the vertical "X" design repeated in triplicate adds nice detail.
This basket enhanced with wee lights will certainly be enjoyed during the evening hours or lit on a gloomy day near the window for all to enjoy!
Overall height is 12 1/2" including the snowman (the basket itself stands 5 3/5" tall), the top opening measures 7" across (right to left) and the bottom measures 5 1/4" across (right to left). Mr. Snowman stands 9" tall, measures 4 1/4" across @ the widest point (arms) and measures 2 1/2" across his belly (right to left). A strand of 35 tiny lights are included.
