Spring has a way of blessing our homes with color by the creative “huswife” as she gathers the earliest bloomers to come up in the garden. They usually consist of daffodils, tulips and forsythia. What a great way to accent pieces of stoneware, redware along with early blown glassware such as a demi John. This next offering delights us with an arrangement of forsythia along with crisp white and yellow daisies used as an accent for a mid-19th century salt glazed jug.
Interesting and unusual piece of stoneware having an applied handle boasts a “Gonic” style appearance referencing pale floating halo's against a warm nutmeg ground. The soft, rich earth tones are soothing and create a delicious hue that gestures a neutral color palette. It is difficult to attribute this jug to a specific region as there is no makers mark or decoration to go by. There is a hairline, tight crack located in the back (midway) that cascades downward to the base as shown in images 17, 18 & 19.
Glaze pops have occurred during the firing process, one near the crack and others (smaller in size) are sprinkled randomly throughout as shown in images 4 & 9. A small wavy line, though hard to detect can be found on the front upper area as referenced in image 4. Just below the top edge there is a horizontal brown streak captured inside the crevice as shown in image 15.
There are no chips to report and the overall condition is good. I am enamored with the lovely size as this piece will not take up much room but yet captivates our attention at the same time! Can be placed on a deep windowsill in your kitchen as well as your bedroom or can be set on a shelf or a candle-stand with perhaps old books nearby. Seasonal floral and or botanical arrangements to keep in step with certain times of the year would make this jug and you very happy indeed! Enjoy!
