This unusual mid to late 19th century candle holder with whispers of tole decoration is accompanied by hand knit baby socks and a spray of snow kissed winter greens. The strap handle for mounting is a unique feature and may have been added at a later date.
Pieces such as this one do take a little intuitive detective work to figure out and analyze. In this case, the bottom of the candle holder is painted green yet the rest of this piece has vestiges of black paint highlighted with a simple tole decoration throughout. The strap handle was fastened by two bottom pins that do extend to the inside of the drip pan area. An extended tab was factored into the design of the finger loop used at one point to carry this piece around and may give us a clue of the candle holders original use.
The push up tab feature was missing when I found this holder so Harry added a “make-do” tab fashioned from old wood that I antiqued to match the existing paint. There is play in the shaft as it does wiggle around but is secure and still holds a straight position. The paint is somewhat flakey but promises not to disappoint you like some people we know! The tin is free of holes and is lacking any cosmetic creases or dents.
A lady in Canada made these darling tiny socks that boast a variegated winter white mixed with soft grey sporting a black ribbed cuff. They are tied together with black yarn and accented with a couple dried rose hips and snow tipped greens. A chenille candy cane and greens are also included and lay off to the right.
This is a very distinctive piece of early lighting that would be amazing hung on a lonely wall and will generate instant early charm to your homestead without delay. Enjoy!
