Warm earth tone color hues seem to radiate from this cozy wool patchwork quilt by satisfying our “primitive color palette”. The chosen fabrics used could have been from suits that were incorporated into this quilt. The back is also beautiful lending a homespun variegated stripped appearance. This textile dates from the late 19th to early 20th century.

The quilt is comprised of interesting wool representations of tweeds, pinstripes, windowpane checks and twill patterns that individually make up each block. A solid buttermilk wool seemingly adds respite to the stronger earth tone colors.

This quilt possesses a hand tied feature using a warm sorrel colored yarn. The cascading border is the same fabric used on the back and was completely hand stitched (image 23) on all four sides. It is difficult to determine if the blocks were hand stitched as the edges are folded over and this quilt has a tied feature. It does appear when peeking under the fabric that the stitches have an even look which in theory leads to the possibility they were sewn on a machine.

Some of the patchwork blocks have small moth nibbles (images 8 & 9) while a couple rips can be found on the other blocks (images 10 & 11). There are also areas that have incurred small stains as referenced in images 16 through 22 but do not affect the overall appearance. One block has experienced slight separation on the edge as shown in image 7. A couple hand-stitched sweet “make-do” repairs are also present in a couple locations as referenced in images 12, 14 & 15. There are no odors to report.

The woven homespun fabric on the back of the quilt lends pleasing colors of madder reds, nutmeg browns, cornflower blue, mustard yellow and eggshell white, most lending a pinstripe appearance. There are some areas of pale white spots sprinkled at random (images 31 through 35) along with areas of toning (images 28 & 29) . A small piece of batting is poking through the yarn as shown in image 30. Overall condition is still good as this textile shows well. If you are tucking the quilt in with pillows we suggest you use a throw or another quilt at the foot of the bed as it may be a little short to accomplish an overhang situation. Enjoy!

Quilt measures 82” by 69”. Please see bed recommendations below:

This lovely quilt will fit nicely on a double bed (mattress size 75” by 54”) and will allow 7 extra inches vertically (headboard to footboard) and15” horizontally (sides of bed). If laid on a queen bed (mattress size 80” by 60”) there will be minimal overhang.
