Redware Bowl Slip Decoration French Origin

#943

Regular price $115.50

Redware pottery is a perfect fit for autumn decorating as the beautiful colors lending a deep rust truly delivers splendid autumn flavor in our homes! This next offering will do just that as the color is delicious as well as the slip decoration.

The French were making redware pieces at the same time we were and this bowl dates to the 1850 to 1875 period. It may have been made in the Eastern part of France. This footed bowl possesses great character as the form is very appealing including the graduated sides. A pronounced inside rolled lip along with a series of incised circles located on the outside as well as the height provide nice detail and make for a special piece! Some of the glaze appears to have a waterfall effect by cascading downward on the outside areas at random as shown in images 6, 8, 7 & 11.

The rim has experienced a multitude of chips some are tiny while others are a little larger. The inside is in good condition with minimal loss… less an area in the middle that possesses three small indentations as referenced in image 5. Buttercup yellow slip was used for the “raised” decoration that blesses us with an array of repeated design elements that include a leaf, dots (flowers) and a wavy swag.  There is gentle crazing in the glazed area.

There are more than several chips present on the bottom’s outermost footed rim as shown in images 22, 21 & 22. However this bowl is free of cracks.

French antiques have become extremely popular with the farmhouse style of decorating along with fitting in nicely with our country primitive collections as well. This bowl will lend charming character in your kitchen paired up perhaps with an old wooden spoon as shown but is not included with this purchase. The hand applied decoration certainly makes for a special piece that I am sure you will enjoy!

Bowl stands 3” tall, measures almost 8 ½” across the top and measures almost 4 ¾” across the bottom.
